Michael Connerly is sought out by the Deep Prophets to board the exploration vessel, the Orca, to act as a spiritual advisor. The Orca, commanded by recently promoted Captain Chen Mui, is headed toward Venus to investigate a swirling vortex that threatens to tear the planet apart as it expands. The vortex is named the Entropy Gate and its mysterious origins are stirring debates between scientists and politicians. The discoverer of the Entropy Gate furthers the debate by announcing that he believes the vortex leads to another dimension, perhaps a spiritual dimension. As the Orca nears the dangerous planet, Chen, Michael and David Franke, a securities and insurance representative, discover that there are stowaways on board who are intent on destroying the Orca before it completes it's journey.
